Scifi Shanty Town – (part 1 of 3)

We know this is scifi because the inhabitants may not have a restroom but they do have electricity.

I feel like a solar panel station and a outhouse would be fitting here. I considered hanging laundry but I wasn’t sure if Cultists do their laundry? I mean, when I think about it, being insane and in a cult doesn’t necessarily mean they don’t bathe. Even if it is just in the blood of their victims they probably need a change from time to time.

I intentioned this terrain should be flexible though, so I think it needs more boxes/barrels/trash/laundry to make it seem more real. Perhaps this is actually a refugee camp or the remaining survivors of a crashed spaceship?

Materials:

  • Little cardstock boxes that acrylic ink comes in (this is what started this build).
  • Corrugated paper. I had to get this on Amazon because I could not find it locally.
  • Generic stuff you probably already have including:
    • Coffee stirrers. Essential for everything scratch building.
    • Medium weight chipboard. The base of the doors use this.
    • Screen replacing material. This has a sticky back but any kind of screen material would do fine.
    • 1/4″ rabbit fencing material for window bars. Okay, this one is optional but it is super useful. It makes great railing and can be used as an polyclay armature or tree armature or even as a ladder. Good alternative would be toothpicks/screen or any grating material.
    • Dollar-store cotton swabs
    • Cereal card
    • Hot glue
    • Old plastic sprue to make the front of the building higher so the roof is slanted. I could have used anything but I was trying to use these somewhere. There is too much plastic and upcycling plastic trash into art is one of the things I love about this hobby 🙂

This was built rather quickly but once I add some more details, and remove the hot glue reminants with a lighter, I want to do a nice rusty effect on them. After that, hairspray, tan paint, oil weathering, and pigment powders.

On the right is an ink box with sprue and coffee stirrers that the roof sits on.
